WORKSHOPS. GRADUATE STUDY. PARTNERSHIPS.
We thrive on collaboration both within our lab and beyond the university setting. To this end we promote a wide array of multi-disciplinary activities that encompass academic, non-profit and industrial partnerships.
We work with a number of award-winning student teams that participate in international competitions focused on synthetic biology, DNA origami, and biological design. Team activities serve as an incubator for scientific imagination that often feeds back into lab research projects. Please contact us to learn more about participating in or sponsoring team activities.

GRADUATE PROGRAMS
MICROBIOLOGY & IMMUNOLOGY
The Department of Microbiology & Immunology at the University of British Columbia provides a stimulating environment for graduate research and many opportunities for interactions with other departments and medical research institutes. Our faculty is internationally recognized in microbiology, molecular biology, cell biology, and immunology.
GENOME SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
The Genome Science and Technology graduate program is a trans-disciplinary program that combines genomic research with leading-edge technology development in genome sciences for students pursuing an M.Sc. or Ph.D. This program is intended to accommodate the diverse background of students and the broad nature of genomic research in human, animal, plant, microbes, and viruses.
BIOINFORMATICS
The Bioinformatics Graduate Program offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees to students doing research in the field of bioinformatics. The interdisciplinary graduate program, administered by the Faculty of Science, combines training in both biological and computational methodologies.
DATA SCIENCE
Data is everywhere. Continuously generated and collected across every domain, it is a vast and largely untapped resource of information with the potential to reveal insights about every aspect of our lives and the world we live in. However, the ability to uncover these insights is a highly specialized skill possessed by far too few. UBC’s Master of Data Science program was designed to address this workforce gap.
PARTNERSHIPS
We work closely with user partners to develop microbial biotechnologies in support of the emerging bioeconomy. These partnerships are critical pathways for knowledge mobilization and create robust opportunities for real-world training experiences within the lab. Please contact us if you are interested in partnering with us.
FUNDERS
Our work is enabled by the generous support of numerous funding agencies and non-profit organizations in both Canada and the United States providing operating and resource capacity grants. Please contact us if you would would like to support a current project or develop a new research initiative within the lab.
